Munich: smooth journey experience in case of events

One of the SOCRATES2.0 services that will be tested in the Munich region is “smart destination”. The idea is to deliver smart traffic and navigation services to road users who are visiting the Allianz Arena or the Munich Trade Fair (Messe München).

What is the problem?

For many road users big events have negative impact on their mobility. Roads are temporarily closed, parking areas are not accessible or only with restricted access, traffic increases and many drivers have no knowledge of the local circumstances, which causes discomfort for all road users. The service ‘smart destination’ provides road users with smart individual route guidance towards the event location and parking locations.

How does the service work?

Based on the service provider’s algorithms and shared event-related data of the public authority and the event manager (preferred gateways, parking information, etc.) the road users receive route guidance to the event location and optimal parking location.

How is the cooperation between public and private partners being shaped for this service?

Information on a tactical and/or strategical level is exchanged between the partners. This involves shared event-related data (preferred gateways, parking information, etc.) and strategic information of the public authority. No so-called intermediary roles will be implemented. The Bavarian Road Authority provides his preferred routes strategies via the national access point MDM (Mobility Data Marketplace). But it is up to the service provider to integrate this extended information best in the individual user’s navigation advice.

The approach of SOCRATES is to use available techniques and existing standards and bring it to deployment. How is that applicable to this use case?

The Bavarian Road Authority has Traffic Management Strategies in place for the highway network. They make it available on the so-called Mobility Data Marketplace (MDM) for traffic information. It is a neutral platform where providers and users of traffic data from public authorities and the private sector can find (constantly expanding) traffic data and quality standards for publishing and transferring data. Different then the Allianz Arena, that operates a huge parking garage, and is located near the highway exit, is the Trade Fair Munich. The Bavarian Road Authority made traffic management plans for the Munich Trade Fair available, not only for highways, but also for the local roads towards the parking locations. Now that the traffic management strategy is linked to parking location information, the service providers can provide route guidance up to a parking location. The routing guidance includes the right highway exit and which parking lot to use best. This approach perfectly fits the SOCRATES2.0 goal to use available techniques and existing standards and bring it to deployment.

This service will be made available for existing users of different services? Which ones and when will they be available?

Three service providers will offer this new service: BMW Group, TomTom and BrandMKRS/Livecrowd. These service providers will recruit so-called test users to use and review the service. For evaluation they will be asked to answer questions about the use of the service. The pilot will start in Autumn 2019.
